The recent signing of the contract for a new Enterprise rail fleet marks a major milestone for the M1 Corridor and for cross‑border connectivity on the island of Ireland.
The €698 million investment will see eight state‑of‑the‑art intercity trains introduced on the Dublin–Belfast Enterprise service, strengthening one of the most strategically important transport links supporting the M1 Corridor – a region home to over two million people and a rapidly growing concentration of businesses, talent and innovation.
Connectivity is a cornerstone of economic growth, and the Enterprise service plays a vital role in linking communities, employers, workers and visitors along the Dublin–Belfast axis. The new trains, due to enter service from late 2028, will deliver a step change in comfort, accessibility and performance, helping to future‑proof the Corridor for continued growth.
Based on Stadler’s FLIRT platform and purpose‑designed for the route, each train will offer around 400 seats and a significantly enhanced passenger experience, including:
These improvements matter not just for passengers, but for employers and investors who rely on high‑quality, reliable transport infrastructure to attract talent and do business across the region.
Crucially, the new Enterprise fleet will be Ireland’s first tri‑mode trains, capable of operating on electric, diesel and battery power. This innovation will reduce emissions, enable quieter journeys, and ensure seamless operation as the line transitions toward full electrification in the years ahead.
Alongside infrastructure enhancements, the new fleet will support faster journey times – with a target of under two hours for express services – and allow for expansion to up to 16 services per direction each day. For the M1 Corridor, this means greater frequency, increased capacity and improved reliability, supporting sustainable commuting patterns and reducing reliance on private car travel.
This landmark cross‑border investment is jointly funded by the Government of Ireland, the Northern Ireland Executive and the PEACEPLUS programme, reflecting a shared commitment to long‑term regional development. The enhanced Enterprise service will strengthen economic ties between cities and towns along the Corridor, supporting tourism, education, collaboration and labour market mobility.
For the M1 Corridor, improved rail connectivity reinforces the region’s value proposition: a place where businesses can access international markets, talent can move easily between opportunities, and communities benefit from high‑quality, sustainable infrastructure.
As the M1 Corridor continues to grow as a key economic region on the island, investment in strategic infrastructure like the Enterprise rail service is essential. The new fleet represents more than new trains – it is an investment in connectivity, sustainability and shared prosperity.
The M1 Corridor will continue to champion initiatives that enhance accessibility, strengthen cross‑border collaboration and position the region as a globally competitive place to live, work and invest.
