Louth to Benefit from Major National Water Infrastructure Project

Uisce Éireann has submitted a planning application for the largest water infrastructure project in the State’s history, marking a major step forward for long‑term water security across the Eastern and Midlands region — including the M1 Corridor.

The Water Supply Project – Eastern and Midlands Region will deliver a new, resilient drinking water supply for up to 50% of Ireland’s population. For Louth, this means improved reliability, greater capacity for growth, and increased resilience as existing Dublin‑bound supplies are redirected back to regional communities.

Key features of the project include:

  • A new national treated water “spine” running from the Shannon to Dublin, with future offtake potential for regional towns and businesses.
  • Strengthened supply to support housing delivery, business expansion and inward investment across the M1 Corridor.
  • A multi‑million‑euro Community Gain Investment Fund for local environmental, educational and community initiatives.
  • Over 1,000 construction jobs at peak, with wider economic benefits for local suppliers.

Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin in 2028 and take up to five years.

This landmark project represents a significant boost for the M1 Corridor, supporting sustainable growth, regional competitiveness and long‑term economic development.
